Here in Idaho, there has been a huge amount of excitement about the benefits of getting a Utah concealed carry permit. In recent years, the benefits of the Utah permit have shrunk to the point that, for most Idahoans, it no longer justifies the extra work and expense. In the following table, I will compare the relative benefits of each permit. When Idahoans understand the truth, Utah will largely become an expensive memory for most.
| Feature | Idahoan with Idaho permit | Idahoan with Utah permit | Comments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carry in Colorado | Yes | No | While it is true that Colarado does recognize the Utah permit, it does not recognize the permit if it is held by a Utah non-resident. |
| Carry in Delaware | No | Yes | Delaware does not honor the Idaho permit |
| Carry in Florida | Yes | No | While it is true that Florida does recognize the Utah permit, it does not recognize the permit if it is held by a Utah non-resident. |
| Carry in Michigan | Yes | No | While it is true that Michigan does recognize the Utah permit, it does not recognize the permit if it is held by a Utah non-resident. |
| Carry in Minnesota | No | Yes | Minnesota does not honor the Idaho permit |
| Carry in Mississippi | No | Yes | Mississippi does not honor the Idaho permit |
| New Hampshire | Yes | No | While it is true that New Hampshire does recognize the Utah permit, it does not recognize the permit if it is held by a Utah non-resident. |
| Virginia | No | Yes | Virginia does not honor the Idaho permit |
| West Virginia | No | Yes | West Virginia does not honor the Idaho permit |
| No | Yes | Washington does not honor the Idaho permit | |
| Only states inside of the continental United States were analyzed for this study. Only states where the Utah and Idaho permits are treated differently were listed. All information provided herein was researched at www.handgunlaw.us. | |||
Idaho or Utah, there are benefits and trade-offs with both permits. Take a careful look at the states listed above. If being able to carry in any of these states is necessary for you, get the permit that best meets your needs. If you do not frequent any of the states where Utah is favored over Idaho, the Idaho permit is a no-brainer. There are three additional and significant benefits for the Idahoan who gets the Idaho permit:
- Lower fees
- The money stays in your home state
- The cost of the course includes range time and real-world tactical training.
